Happy Valentine's Day!
I hope you're enjoying it a little better than my relative, who wrote, "If you're sad about being alone on Valentine's Day, just remember nobody loves you on any other day of the year either."
Well, I'm getting excited about the Fair starting this Saturday (all going well).  Hopefully I've given you enough notice to choose (or even write) a post about preparedness for the new Preparedness Fair.  The wonderful Heidi from My Simple Country Living posted a very kind feature yesterday, and she's the first to let me know she was planning to enter a post!
It would be so wonderful if you could all think of someone who might have a preparedness blog or who might be interested in writing a post that they could share here.  Do you belong to a Facebook group about homesteading and survivalism?  An internet community or forum on preparedness?  Would you be willing to share about this so that we can get this buzzing a bit?  Please grab the code for the button that's now on the bottom of the left sidebar, and paste it into the html of your blog posts or forum posts, or copy and save the picture below onto your computer to then add into a Facebook post with a link.  Or just write something and add a link?  It will make the first Fair so much more interesting if there are more than a couple of participants.  Thank you!

If you're new here today, or if you want something to copy for helping spread the word, here's the "blurb."

Have you written anything about preparedness?  The Preparedness Fair is coming soon, and would love to have your post included on it!  The focus will be on disaster preparedness, and sharing our experiences and insights that might benefit others.

Please see above for how to read these books without a Kindle, and the sidebar at left for a quick explanation of this blog. Have fun getting new books! :) May I suggest that you check daily so you don't miss all those available for only 24 hrs. Many of yesterday's books will still be free, so if you missed checking then, it's still worth a visit, as you may pick up some gems that way.
If you are coming here on a later date than February 14, please check the most recent list for today's books: Main Page.   (Some of the books below may still be available. Most are free for 1 or 2 days but sometimes they are free longer.)

For the fastest notification of daily posts, please "Like" Prep Utility Vehicle on Facebook.  I will post the link to the latest blog post there immediately after publishing it each day.  This should help those who have trouble with different readers and email notification being fast enough.

By using sophisticated encryption and communication techniques, they hit our Achilles heel and the devastation begins.”

Collapse, Post-Apocalypse, Speculative Futures

The Youth Cup
”The year is 2061. The world is in the throes of a pandemic. Medical science is baffled by the Calcium Atrophic Tri-lateral Syndrome which is, thus far, always fatal. Its victims are the very young and the very old. Temple LaCosse, a 32 year-old government agent from the Environmental Protection and Reclamation Agency, is sent south to present another award to La Tasse de La Juenesse, Inc. creator of the Youth Cup creme that prevents aging. LaCosse's research uncovers a thread of evidence that will not go away. C.A.T.S. is most prevalent in the vicinity of La Tasse plants in the U.S. and abroad, yet the company checks out pristine in every way. Could there be a connection between the Youth Cup creme and the pandemic, or is she chasing wild geese?”

The Adventures of Redman Red

Fuel is worth more than gold, the sea levels have risen dramatically, and most of the remaining human population live fearful, conformist lives in isolated, self-sufficient city-states, run by sophisticated, but increasingly paranoid, artificial intelligences. Outside, the marginalised and cast-out have reverted to a happier, tribal existence; as the neglected countryside has reverted to lush wilderness. “

The Eclective: The Apocalypse Collection
Collection of apocalypse stories, a number of which include science fiction.

Resistant Blood 2 (Post-Apocalyptic Hobo)

It is also a time of oppression; when overlords are suspicious of the people, for now is the time foretold. …in the end devastation will be faced. Men will weep. Women will perish. Families will be orphaned. Ruin will reign. Hope will be gone. Death will give forth life. Out of the sun good will face evil in the unwinnable, final battle. Evil will be ripped apart. Good will be cast into pieces. The prophecy will come to pass.”

The Stolen: Two Short Stories (The Meaning Wars)
”Tired of apocalypse stories about zombies and explosions? Pick up an accessible and beautifully-written two-story collection about characters lost in a world that's chosen to trade freedom for enlightenment…What crimes are committed in the name of peace, control, and harmony? Clarice and Sarah are about to find out. “ Some coarse language and themes. See link for more details.

Strictly Analog

But that’s his edge: his business card reads “Strictly Analog,” and he markets himself as a man able to skirt the technological landscape without leaving a trail.”

The Last Day on Earth
”Sometimes Lucy Black wishes that the authorities had never confirmed that an asteroid, even bigger than the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, was on a collision path with Earth, and never admitted that all attempts to divert the massive asteroid had failed. That was two months ago. Today is the day it's due to hit. A novella of … approx. 70 pages”

Fall of the Citizens
”A pharmaceutical company receives a lucrative government contract for a vaccine currently coveted by the entire U.S. population. They set the price at $60,000 per shot, putting the vaccine out of the reach of all but the wealthiest of Americans. The situation creates a class warfare powder keg that only needs one thing to ignite, the words of a man. This man is known simply as Max, a man who believes revolution is the only remedy to the disparity between the haves and the have nots. He sets to work at gathering a talented, highly motivated group he calls “The Citizens” and tasks them with recruiting all those who feel like the world stopped being on their side a long time ago. Together they record a message to the American people with Max’s moving words “I refuse to be your slave. I refuse to let you distract me with fear and promise me a tomorrow that will never come. I refuse to let you drain me of hope so that I am docile, broken and clinging to the absolute minimum. I refuse to live my life as a reaction to your choices.” A revolution has begun.”

Passing On
”In a not too distant future the human race has been devastated by forces they thought they could control. Now life is simple, brutal, and savage. When their neighbors are taken by strangers Grandma's small community gathers together to hunt down and kill the attackers and hopefully save their friends. This is a short story with scientific background information included.”

Seed Savers: Lily
Youth. Illegal gardening, fresh produce, dystopian society, kids on the run... “What if the key to the future is buried in your past? After her friends disappear amid suspicions to their link with the underground Seed Savers Movement, Lily digs around to learn more. The truth she uncovers sets her on a path fraught with uncertainty. How will Lily decide which way to turn, or whom she can trust?”
From review: “ A must read for children, young adults and grandparents who enjoy suspense, family relationships and care about our food sources.”
Author “grew up on a farm with a tremendously large garden. She maintains that if you can't taste the soil on a carrot, it's not fresh enough. Although she now lives …in the city, she still manages to grow fruit and vegetables on their lot, as well as tend to three egg-laying and friendly hens. Someday, she hopes to add bees to the collection.”
Sequel to Seed Savers: Treasure, not free today.

The Half-Life of Johnny Seiko - Part I: Hard Lessons (The Seiko Odyssey)

As they scour the landscape looking for food and distraction, their travels bring hope and a sense of purpose to their solitary existence, until a chance encounter aboard a crashed alien spacecraft hurls our young hero headlong down a rocky path of unescapable destiny.”

See also The Eclective: The Apocalypse Collection, which is listed in above section too.

The Pathfinder Project
”A small group of explorers are left with a difficult choice after an unexpected nuclear war breaks out on Earth. Choosing to save what little they can of humanity, they set out on an exploratory mission in a state-of-the-art colony vessel called Pathfinder... a ship with a new, experimental wormhole Point-to-Point drive that grants them the option to leap several light years into the distance, or several MILLION. What will be the fate of the Pathfinder? What will be the fate of the survivors who still live on Earth?”

”Edmund moves across the desolate landscape lumbering towards home. He arrives, overjoyed to discover that his family is dead – they did not have to live through The Fall, did not have to fight cannibals and bandits, did not have to survive the apocalypse. They did not suffer. Like millions of others they got caught up in pandemic flu and died. Satisfied, after nine-years of traveling, Edmund can get on with what is left with his life. He finds a local cluster of fellow survivors, including a friend from his past, and joins the difficult task of rebuilding a world undone by disaster. His comfort is short-lived. Not long after settling into his new home, he discovers that he has become unstuck in time. Through an unknown mechanism, he oscillates between past and future, hope and despair. He rushes to determine how this is happening, and to do something - anything - to save the world he knew, while contemplating whether what he is experiencing is real or madness brought on by a decade of looming extinction.”

The Martian
From review: “A futuristic Robinson Crusoe! Due to a dust storm, Mark Watney is left for dead in the Acidalia region of Mars when the Ares 3 mission is aborted 6 days into the scheduled two months. What follows is largely a logbook of living in a large tent or a small rover for about 550 days on what was supposed to be two month's rations for 6 people. Fortunately there were some potatoes for thanksgiving that were alive, so Mark starts dividing them and growing them. But first he has to make soil, and then water, and so on. Generally speaking, a logbook is a poor technique, but here it is brilliant. You cannot have conversation, and you cannot develop other characters, but did I mention he was abandoned? Alone? You might still think that 550 days stuck in a tent or rover could get boring, but no, this book is absolutely gripping…” Originally published chapter by chapter.
