Free Books Available Jan 31, 2013

Please see above for how to read these books without a Kindle, and the sidebar at right (under the “Follow by Email” button) for a quick explanation of this blog. Have fun getting new books! :) May I suggest that you check daily so you don't miss all those available for only 24 hours?

Many of yesterday's books will still be free, so if you missed checking then, it's still worth a visit, as you may pick up some gems that way.

If you are coming here on a later date than January 31, please check the most recent list for today's books. Main Page.   (Some of the books below may still be available. Most are free for 1 or 2 days but sometimes they are free longer.)

Was anyone else deeply affected by the story of the isolated family in the article I posted yesterday?  (Here is is again. For 40 Years, This Russian Family Was Cut Off From All Human Contact)  It is a bit on the long side, but really, really, REALLY worth that little bit of extra time to get to the end.  I could hardly sleep last night thinking about them, their decades of isolation and desolation, hardship, starvation, the mom's story, the story of the one last seed, how they got there, and how the story ends.  Deeply affecting.  Would love to hear what some of you thought.

True Accounts

Homeless Tears
”a woman’s journal of her family’s struggle with homelessness. A TRUE heart-breaking journey that encompasses the darkest days and hours of this Florida family struggling with unforeseen dark abysmal realities that move them quickly from the middle-class to homelessness. “
The one-star review has nothing to do with the book itself.

Diary of A Sick Chick: Year Two of Living With Chronic Illness

Prostate cancer: Climbing above it
”Nine men tell their stories of how they experienced advanced prostate cancer and how they were lifted up above it.”

BUSH'S LEGS (Bringing Hidden Things to Light)
”Reflective of a country that was in the midst of transition on all levels and by all accounts, the book takes readers on a fascinating journey. The fragile political climate of that era created a unique opportunity to let true miracles take place in a cold, industrial, closed-to-foreigners military city and in the hearts of people hungry for things spiritual even more than hard-to-find food items. A story of courage, trust, breaking stereotypes, making deep soulful connections and encountering equally deep disappointments offers a snapshot of historic breakthroughs, large and small - political, spiritual, personal. “

Just Call Me Ted
”The biography of Ted Powell, a man who has lived on both ends of the spectrum - war time soldier and deliverer of humanitarian aid, juvenile delinquent and good Christian, tough guy and kind man, daredevil and family man.”

Down But Never Out

In My Father's Footsteps
Son follows footsteps of father captured by Germans, wounded, POW, etc.

Walk Forward
“a gripping account of the Holocaust depicting the horrific mental and physical anguish faced during a family's remarkable survival during the Lodz Ghetto, Auschwitz, Stutthof, and the burning city of Dresden. The story is told through the eyes of young Rosie born in Germany after the Holocaust and the family's resettlement in America.”

Nature Survival, War, and other Hardship

Land of Foes: A Novel of the Civil War Era (Book 1)
”Demetrius Woodacre has fought in some of the Civil War's bloodiest battles, only to desert when his army passes close to his home. While the young soldier believes his fighting is done, the horrors of war creep ever closer, calling him back to the seemingly infinite conflict.”

Storm Clouds Rolling In (Bregdan Chronicles)
”Carrie Cromwell comes of age as the dark clouds of the Civil War swallow the country. Born with a fiery spirit and a strong mind, she finds herself struggling between the common wisdom of the South and the truth she has discovered. The activities of the Underground Railroad and her close friendships with the Cromwell Plantation slaves create difficult choices. But when her decisions put her at odds with her heritage, and challenge her dreams, will she be able to give up all that is precious to her?”

Swept to Hell: A Novel of the Civil War Era (Book 2)
”A year after the devastation of Gettysburg, the Union remains in peril, Confederate offensives and Peace Democrats seeking to oust a beleaguered Lincoln from the presidency. But with the fall of Atlanta and sweeping Yankee victories in the Shenandoah Valley, the momentum of the Civil War rapidly shifts to favor the North. The perspective of the conflict's final nine months changes from high-ranking figures, like John Bell Hood and Phil Sheridan, to more humble soldiers, such as the sharpshooting rebel rover and the Sollers brothers; two privates fighting for the Union, both serving in different armies. In "Swept to Hell", the war provides a bond that brings some characters together in support of emancipation and an undivided nation, while other more desperate fellows continue hatching last-ditch plots to satisfy their rogue fanatical beliefs.”

Dancing on Canvey (Short Story Singles)
”It is the evening of 31 January 1953, when a storm hits the east coast of the England. Inspired by the reminiscences of people from Canvey Island where over fifty people lost their lives that night, this short story follows Gwynnie, a young girl whose main concern is whether she will be able sneak out to the dance without her parents seeing her, and meet with Johnny Deakin. ‘Dancing on Canvey’ won the Fish Short Histories Prize, and is included (two anthologies). … novelist Bernard Cornwell …calls it ‘A gem of a tale’.”

The Hunt: On the trail of the whitetail
”This short story describes the real-life experience of a seasoned hunter who ends up in a brutal, life-or-death face-off with a fierce wild animal. Using his tracking sensibilities and naturalist's instinct, an old man follows the trail of an injured buck during bow-hunting season in rural Virginia. Along the way, the reader gets the sense of being alone in the woods with the hunter. When he finally comes upon the deer, the battle that ensues is an illustration of the struggle of man against wild nature. Will the man's strength prevail?”

Politics, Terrorism, and Intrigue/Conspiracy

Binding Wounds: An Alternate Reconstruction
“A serendipitous sneeze foils the assassination of Lincoln, altering the lives of his countrymen in unexpected ways. Problems persist though, as the country is still gripped by racial and regional discord. Frederick Douglass and Wade Hampton, Robert Smalls and John Mosby are called on to work together to help heal the nation and reunite its people.”

NEXT BEST HOPE (The Revelation Trilogy)
”A tightly crafted legal thriller written by an attorney who knows the law. A national coalition known as the Christian Militants attempts to overthrow the United States government and all hell breaks loose. As the rebellion threatens to divide the nation, two unlikely leaders arise in the opposing camps. Will they save the Union, usher in the Kingdom of God or plunge the United States into all-out civil war?”

Collapse, Post-Apocalypse, Speculative Futures

Talon's Reach
”In 2053, at the dawn of the Second Civil War, fifteen-year-old Lillie Forester has learned how to stay alive. Don’t take sides. Let the eastern and western states hash it out. Stay invisible. But when a covert faction of dissidents kidnaps her, she is forced to choose a side. To her surprise, the Camp wants the same thing she wants: to prevent the war from ever happening. She soon discovers that the lines being drawn turn friends into enemies, brothers and sisters into bitter rivals, and lovers into traitors. Navigating her way through a war, with lines smudging ever grayer, could be deadly--especially for anyone who steps in front of her gun. And, in the end, Lillie’s search for the truth may cost her more than she ever thought possible.”
From review: “The idea that our teenagers can make a real difference in bringing serious solutions to serious problems is powerful. The youth in Talon's Reach aren't leaving the future of the country to an inept government, they're taking matters into their own hands while at the same time learning about themselves and their place in the world. Each with special abilities yet some as corrupt as the government they seek to overthrow, the success of these kids will depend on a delicate web of trust and a healthy dose of the truth.“

More Sci-Fi-or-Fantasy-ish

Dreams of Earth (Among the Chosen)
”My name is Jamie Ward. I'm fifteen and I live with my sister and grandparents on a farm in the middle of the country. Even with the increasing migration to the outer worlds, parts of earth are still crowded--but not here in the middle of America. Too few people are left to produce the food the cities need and so we are allowed a comfortable, old-fashioned existence as long as we keep growing beef and grains for the rest of our country. I love it, love going to a small school with close friends, fishing and hunting, being self-reliant. That's why I wasn't happy at all, after the tests, when I was among the chosen. Why me? I'm an ordinary guy, good at sports, nothing special in the classroom. What is about me that I've been picked to send along with 99 other fifteen-year-olds, half boys and half girls, to a distant settler world.?”

Dimensional Shift: Waters of Babylon
”Volume 2 of the Dimensional Shift Trilogy Some 22,000 people parked in space struggle to save what's left of dying earth. Kelt Nelby attempts to learn the secrets of an ancient artifact which may hold the clues to restore Earth's plant life. Separated by a lethal virus, his soul mate, Akhi Richmond, battles to keep humanity from perishing in the cities floating far above the Earth's surface. While humans on earth exterminate each other, only a very few will find the means for humanity's survival.”

Winter (A Screenplay)
"Using the vast range of the rocky mountains as their shelter, Ashley and George are faced with trying to raise their son, Adam, who was born after a genetic engineering incident that created a worldwide epidemic of the walking dead. Adam is 13 years old now and the only things that he knows about culture and traditions are what his Parent’s tell him and what he sees from old abandoned cities. But there is only so much that his Parents can show and tell. While trying to introduce Adam to the social traditions they once lived in, his parents must teach a non-influenced mind that is cynical towards many social beliefs systems of the past. All at the same time of simply trying to survive. Struggling to teach Adam life, his parents George and Ashley our caught between the stresses in teaching a new generation how to live in times that the old generation is also trying to accustom themselves to..."

Year 50
A variation on the zombie theme, where aliens inhabit human bodies. Complete Edition includes both Year 50 and Year 50: Trial of the Summer. “On the fringe of extinction, it will take bravery to persevere. "Year 50" is a science fiction novel set in a future where humanity is nearly extinct, and the last human colony is struggling to survive against the combined cruelty of nature and an alien species. Calypso has been raised from her young life to fight them, and it's now on her to save her colony by finding the medicine they need. ‘Year 50’ is a riveting novel that should prove hard to put down." Michael Dunford Midwest Book Review

Just Reading

”Two teenagers are trapped in a cavernous world amid a lost civilization. In order to escape, they must learn the secret of the Source and avoid capture by a renegade chief and his rebels from the Firelands.” Good reviews.

Cooking With Hot Flashes: And Other Ways to Make Middle Age Profitable
”Martha Bolton's observations about life and growing older nail what everyone feels but can't express. ‘Who Put All This Sand in My Hourglass Figure,’ ‘When I Am Old I Shall Be Purple,’ and ‘Allow Me to Repeat Myself...Again’ are just a few of the topics her fans--both new and old--will be laughing at as they nod in agreement. To complete her memorable recipe, Martha mixes in an ample sampling of poignant, touching stories, reminding readers what life is about and what is truly important.”
