This is the page for questions about how the site is run or problems with using the site.

Comments can also be added on each day's update post too.  But if you have a question you need to check back for the answer for, it may be easier to find here at a set location.

To make it quicker for me to get to the bottom of each book page in order to add each new book one at a time, I've disabled comments on those pages.   I may try to move comments already left on those pages here.  I'm not sure yet if that will work.

  1. Your blog is amazing. It is the highlight of my day to come home and see what new free books you've found for me. There's usually 6 or more every single day that I download. Please don't ever stop. If there's a way to donate money to you, let me know.

    1. This comment made my month. Really! Thank you SO much!

I was working on finding ways for people to donate, but I spend so much time just on the daily books, I'm too exhausted to figure anything else out any more. Silly, I know. I must get it done. Thank you so much.

I am not an expert, but set up the paypal account. I only "buy" free books, so that does not help you anyway. I am more than willing to donate periodically $5/$10 periodically for all the time you save ME from searching

  4. Please don't take this as a complaint - I really appreciate all the work you do to bring us all these great books - it's just a comment.

It seems that whenever you post that a Jack Pollard book is free, it never seems to actually BE free. It seems like the author is trying to lure people to his books and hope that they don't notice the price. It doesn't seem to matter if I go right after you post it or later, they're never actually free. I don't know if the author is telling you they're free.

Occasionally books will come up that they're not free, but that's to be expected since Amazon is constantly updating prices. I just notice that consistently Pollard's books are not. Several months ago when you had listed them before, they WERE free - it's just the past couple of months that I've noticed this pattern.

I DO appreciate all the hard work you do and I try to purchase some books when I can afford it so you can get some commission. Just wanted to let you know what I was seeing on my end.

    Thanks again!

    1. I had to look up the author to find out what books he does. I really have no idea why this is happening. I get the books from Amazon's own pricing. So unless this particular author or publisher has some kind of trick to get his books classified as free for only a couple of hours and then stop, I don't know what else would be causing it. I don't have any contact with authors myself. Very puzzling! I'm sorry about that.

    2. Wamting to follow up and see if this has improved. Since you wrote this, I've tried to notice that author's books and double check them. I've noted several come up in past weeks and the ones I've noticed have all definitely been free at the time I've added them to the list.

I just don't understand all the quirks of Amazon!

    3. Hi Natalia,

Just to follow up with what I'm seeing on my end. The last couple of Pollard's books are showing up as full price. I've done some experimenting to see if can figure anything out. The short answer is "No", but wanted to let you know what I tried in case you have any other ideas.

Normally, I access the blog with a reader and the RSS feed, but to do the experimenting, I've been accessing the blog directly refreshing every 15 minutes so that as soon as you add a Pollard book I try to see it as free. I do the refreshing on my phone with a script since it's always with me so I find out as soon as it's posted.

Since I know that sometimes Amazon will display different prices to different browsers, on my phone (Android 4.1.2) I've used Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Firefox beta, Dolphin, and Maxthon browsers as well as the default browser. I've done this over the cellular network, WiFi, and a VPN that shows my phone as a device originating in Canada (BTW I'm actually in the US).

On 2 desktop computers (one running Windows XP SP3 and the other Windows 7) using Internet Explorer (v8 on the XP box and v8 & v10 on Win7), Chrome, Firefox, and Opera over WiFi, direct connect Ethernet (I know there shouldn't be a difference but tried anyway to be thorough), and the VPN over WiFi and direct connect Ethernet.

To make sure I want working on any cached data, I flushed the caches, erased all cookies, excited the browser and actually manually terminated the process / app on both the phone and computers. Can you tell I have too much free time to fritter away? Retirement is fun that way.

The Grand result of all that messing about? Zilch :) I got the same price on everything.

The only other thing I would have liked to have tried was using a Mac since I know that Mac/Safari vs Win/IE is most often where you get different prices, but I don't have a Mac anymore.

Oh, I also tried when logged into my Amazon Prime account, a newly created non-prime account, and not logged into Amazon at all (browsing as guest) both using your affiliate link and directly searching for the books. I thought this might make a difference, but it didn't.

I'm sorry this is such a long way off saying I don't seem to be able to see the Pollard books as free no matter what I do. Like I said before though, when you had listed them several months ago, they DID show up as free. I've got no idea why they aren't now and I'm not sure what else I can try.

I wish some other users would chime in here so we can see if it's just me or not.

    4. I find that many of the books listed as free dont show up free for me, not just one author. I assumed it was that they are no longer free by the time I get the reminder email and then log in that am. I love this site and appreciate all you do! Pam

    6. I think I have the Jack Pollard issue figured out. The Anonymous directly above this comment gave me a good clue because I saw the comment immediately. Today there were 3 Pollard books free first thing in the morning, but by late morning, they were ALL no longer free.

It seems this author, his publisher, or Amazon set his books to be free and "un-freed" at an unusual hour. They are free early morning when I start looking, but then by late morning or early afternoon when I finish the books and post the update, they go off their free offer. To those who would like to get his books free, please try bookmarking and checking THIS LINK: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_st?qid=1370820120&rh=n%3A133140011%2Cp_27%3AJack+Pollard&sort=price yourself at different hours, early morning Pacific time should work. Alternatively, you could just check the Farming/Gardening tab earlier in the morning, before I post the update post, because I do the first two headings first thing, but it's much later before all headings are done.

    7. That link seems to work pretty well. Today's book came up free earlier today using it & by the time the post appeared in the blog it was already back to list price. I guess the best way to get a hold of Pollard's books is to just periodically check that link. Thanks for providing it!

    8. I’m glad you got that one yesterday. There’s another one today, too. They seem to be only free for half a day (or maybe they start the previous evening. So if you really want to not miss any until you have them all, I suggest checking that link every morning.
Thank you for letting me know! :)

I just posted the one comment so I could reply. Thank you so much for your help! I have removed the ones you mentioned. If you decide to continue as you have time or inclination, I should mention that as soon as I add or remove a book, the numbers change. I would have to notice your comment before adding or removing the day's books. I do have a way of removing a bunch of books in one pageview so a range works well. Eg title_____ to title_____. Or if I know to expect your comment, I can make sure I deal with it before adding any books for the day. Hope that makes a bit of sense! Thank you so much. :D

Thank you for your comment and I'm glad you like the prep book pages. All the searches have changed, and I don't know if that's why fewer of the Civil War books have come up. I did try posting a few more since you commented, and also posted, on the True Accounts page itself, a couple of searches for the 2 most common publishers of those books. You can check those too.

You have done a superb fantastic job in the past and I have downloaded a number of free books and bought sequels to same. Since you have revamped the site I have yet to find a free kindle book under my categories, survival and post apocolyptical after checking the date. They always come up as a paid edition which is not a problem if I really want the title. Maybe I am doing it wrong since you have been so fantastic in the past. Any suggestions?

Hi, Harold, I appreciate knowing about glitches. I need a bit more information. Are you in the US? What do you mean by "after checking the date"?

I am listing more books now that are free in the US but not in all other countries. Before I couldn't tell, but now I found a way. If you are in Canada like I am, or another non-US country, this could be an issue. The other thing I can think of is that most are only free a couple of days. However it's always been that way so I'm sure that's not your issue. The way the lists are now, I put the newly free ones at the top, and removing the older ones takes so much time that I don't do it more than once a week or so. However this is also written at the top of each list, so that's probably not the issue with you either. I can't figure out what the problem would be.

    Anonymous April 3, 2013 at 6:28 PM
I am in the US and I first click on the date to make sure I am on the right page and then pull up the tab for the books I want. Most of them are the paid version but once in a while I find a free one but not the ones I want and a lot of them that are free are ones you have listed before and I already have in my library. Nevertheless, you are doing a fantastic job and hopefully the glitch will be ironed out soon.

    1. Harold, I wanted to follow up again and see if things have improved at all. I've tried a few different things to try to avoid this happening. I also wonder whether some computers just don't "jibe" well with Amazon or something. Recently I was told that a book that wasn't free for me should have been, as it was set for international free availability. I'm still following that up, but I wonder if there are just more mysteries in this Amazon machine than I will ever understand.

One thing I have noticed is that if I check the listings twice a day, I have a better chance of getting more books. I think it could be that you enter either before or after I've looked. 21. The last few days, the text in the RSS feed has been about twice the size of normal and bolded. I don't know if this is something that you did or the RSS feed provider did or even if you are aware of it. Just wanted to let you know.

The last few days you've added some permanent links in the book listings. Is it possible to pull them out of the regular listings and place them in the text above like you did with the Charles River Editors & Brief History? Since they're permanent links, I think it makes sense to put them there since otherwise they'll get pushed down the list and people will probably forget to check them when they get out of sight.

Oh, and I guess I might as well step out from behind the "anonymous" label. I'm Tom A. I used that before on a couple of posts but used anonymous when I was chiding you about your holiday so it wouldn't seem like a personal attack or something. 22. You said to use the affiliate links to buy books. Do you mean the "Featured at" links on the right of the page or something else?

Does this mean that if we go to one of the wishlists then we buy a book that you won't get credit? When I look at the URL it looks like it has your referral link, but I want to double check with you first before I do one or the other.

Since you're using the wishlists, does that mean you're not going to be updating the tabs any more? How will you be handling the permanent links you set up? Will you be making a wishlist for those as well?

Thanks and keep up the great work!

    1. Hi, Tom! There were two special Amazon affiliate banners that you could click on. I've now changed it to just one and put it a bit higher on the right hand sidebar; it says "TO HELP SUPPORT THIS BLOG, PLEASE CLICK BEFORE EACH AMAZON PURCHASE. THANK YOU! :)"

Now, on my computer, the banner itself doesn't show, but the words do. I thought it was just a glitch with my computer because it works fine on the other computers at my house. Is that what's happening for you? Maybe I will have to figure out a text link that will work that can go on each post.

You're right, if you go to a wishlist and then purchase a book later for actual money, I won't get any credit. The wishlist is just a way for me to list the books more easily, and I think it has some good options for you also.

At the moment I'm not updating tabs. Eventually I guess they will mainly hold long-term free books. It all takes so much time and just listing takes it out of me.

Thanks Tom for all your moral support; it's so very appreciated! :)

    2. I almost always use my phone when I'm using your site. If my browser is displaying the mobile version of the site, nothing from the right or left side of the page is displayed - only the text in the middle column shows.

If I have it in desktop mode, thewwhole page displays. Like you though, I see the text for the click here, but all I see is the text - no graphics. It's also not a link - it's regular text. I tap all over and around the text but it never opens a link.

This is on an Android phone using the stock browser, Chrome, Dolphin, Firefox, Firefox beta, and Opera browsers.

When I get to a desktop computer, I'll try and see what happens there.

    3. Tom, I wasn't sure if that last comment was regarding some of the issues you brought up in this thread or for the anonymous reader having troubles below. I think it applies to both. 4. The affiliate link in the center isn't showing up on any of the phone browsers I mentioned above. I see the introductory text then a white section about an inch high where I guess the icon should be.

  24. Hi Natalia,

A couple of times you've included the book 10 top Lyme treatments. I'd like to ask you to reconsider including this book. First off, and probably most importantly, the author isn't a medical professional of any kind. He is also promoting "treatments" that have proven to be ineffective or dangerous. He pushes rifing even though it's something that only the most desperate sufferers have latched onto from Internet tales. With both the rifing and one brand name product, his advice reads more like advertising from a shill than independent medical advice.

My doctor and Kenneth Singleton, one of the most respected Lyme Literate doctors (LLMD) have both reviewed it and have expressed concern that someone could read this book and do more harm to themselves. When (if) they seek treatment from a reputable LLMD, it makes treatment more difficult because they have to work out what the patient has done to themselves, what effects it's had, how to reverse any harm done, and finally begin appropriate treatment.

Treating chronic Lyme's is difficult enough without people trying to self medicate. In the best of circumstances it can take years to successfully treat Lyme and the common co-infections. Nobody needs to suffer longer than necessary.

Of course the final call is yours since this is your blog :)

    Thanks and take care.

Natalia was kind enough to provide this link when I told her that I couldn't see the other links.

  27. YES I care if you do this and all your hard work is GREATLY appreciated!

Of course if it's getting to be too much or you're not getting the appreciation or gratitude you deserve for all your work, by all means take a break, cut back, or just tell us all to take a flying leap off a short pier!

This blog is something that you provide to us out of the goodness of your heart. It's something that you do not HAVE to do. If it stops being fun, just go back to looking for books for yourself. You don't owe us anything. The debt is in the other direction.

Whatever you do, all you've done has been wonderful. If you never post another book, that'd be fine too. A labor of love shouldn't be such a labor that it saps the love.

      You are appricated very much.

    2. i love your idea of posting ideas of things to purchase on Amazon. I purchased the Excalibur 3600 Food Dehydrator a few years ago and love it; especially after going through several of the cheaper dehydrators. I saved my pennys until i was able to buy, as it is expensive.

  28. After looking at the books the last couple of days, it looks like Robert Van Norden is pulling the same kind of price tricks as Pollard.

  29. Besides changing Unowned to All, the default sort order for all of the lists is now Date Added. Yay! No more trying to remember to check that with my feeble memory :)

Oh, and the Rennie crochet books you've been running the last few days are real nice - thanks.

  30. Natalia, I've been downloading books from your site for a while now, but today none of the books show up when i click the links. It re-directes me to Amazon's main page. Also it says that your website is not connected to them. It isvery odd, it never happenned before. Thank You for your work. Wilma

    1. That is very strange. The links work for me, but I am signed in. Does it change if you are signed in yourself? I wonder if Amazon is just having some glitches, or it they've decided I don't make them enough money so they're making it difficult? If this is still happening in a few hours or a few days, can you please update? THanks. :) I appreciate your letting me know.

  33. Hi Natalia,

We're getting ready to make a big purchase with your affiliate link but had a question first. What do you get credit for? Only kindle books, real books too, or anything and everything from Amazon?

    Thanks,
    Tom

    1. Well, Tom, you set me doing some research. I recalled an email a few weeks ago from Amazon in which they said something about my Facebook site not meeting their requirements for an associate account. Since I didn't even have that Facebook page when I first applied OVER A YEAR AGO I didn't take much notice. But last night after I read your comment I tried signing in to my associate account so I could ask their help chat what the email actually meant, and it said there was NO ASSOCIATE ACCOUNT connected to my Amazon account! So they have removed my associate status it seems, and I don' t know why. The email didn't make any sense. I can speculate that I don't list any paid items, so don't meet their requirements, but there are so many blogs that only list a couple per post--or less.

To add insult to injury, I had a blog owner of a blog party tell me that my posts don't meet their standards due to my associate links! HAHAHA I nearly split my sides laughing--or maybe not. I wrote back explaining that I make nothing, and they haven't replied. I am so discouraged!

I have been thinking and thinking overnight what to do. I may try again to apply for an associate account (though I don't think that will work as they will have record of removing mine.); I may try another help chat to get them to reinstate it...

and I will have to just get that Paypal button up. But I guess I have mixed feelings after that blog owner "accusing" me of doing this for profit! and the fact that already I spend so much time doing the blasted lists that any other "jobs" exhaust me.

So, Tom, I am so touched that you want to help support my work on this blog like this. I just don't know what to say about your questions. Depending on whether you can wait on your purchases another day, I could try the help chat with the goal of reinstating my account. Honestly I don't know if I can take the rejection!

      :(

    2. Waiting a few days isn't a problem. Just wanted to help give back some of what you give us. When you talk to them ask them what things you can get paid for and what not. I can go ahead and get those things with my ebates account.

      Hope it works out!

    3. BTW does that mean that all the books I've bought the last couple of months with your affiliate link hasn't gotten anything to you? I've gotten almost $200 worth of books the last couple of months!

    4. Dear Tom

I am not sure exactly when they (apparently) pulled the plug, but it must have been several weeks ago, to as much as 6 weeks. I am so sorry, I honestly didn't realize it. :( This morning I reapplied for associateship status and put up a new link in a new blog post. This one will work, as it seems they have automatically accepted my new application. Amazon is certainly unpredictable and no doubt can change whatever they want at any time.

Thank you so much, Tom, for your sincere desire to help and for your patience for me to (try to) get this sorted out.

      Sincerely
      Natalia

    6. Just like the in line links you had before, the new ad link in the body of the post about your new affiliate status doesn't show up on the entry I get with my RSS reader. When I open the page in the browser it DOES show up as a small banner ad for Amazon. It just doesn't show up in the RSS reader.

I think it's a different issue than what we had with the links before though. A few times the last few days you've had ads for other sites in the daily post. In my reader those are sort of working. The picture shows up but doesn't seem to have the link associated with it. If I tap on it in the reader it just opens the picture in the image viewer. I have to open the posting in the web browser to actually go to those sites.

Now I think that might just be a quirk of my particular reader because all the subscriptions I have do the same thing (icons and images never open the link that's supposed to be associated with them) so I don't think there's anything to do about that.

The Amazon ad though doesn't show up at all in any way in the reader. Are you able to do a text link with an affiliate link like you've been doing lately? I mean the link that's right after the paragraph about clicking on an affiliate link but before the paragraph talking about the sorting.

I hope this makes some kind of sense :)

  34. Boy, if you call this a light day, you certainly must have the overachiever gene! Several categories with more than a page of books, even Technical, usually the lightest category, with a half dozen, you really need to stop apologizing!

Put down the mouse and get back to that great family of yours :)

  35. Hi Natalia,

You might want to put the same warning on the books by Penelope Hoyt that you do for the Pollard books. I've been regularly checking and her books are always off sale by noon Eastern Time.

  39. It looks like Amazon might have taken a dislike to the wishlists. None of the links in the current or older posts are working - it comes up with a message from Amazon that they can't process the request.

  40. The wishlists seem to be working today. I was really late getting to them yesterday. I was getting the error message from about 10:30 PM EST yesterday until early this morning about 5AM EST when I woke for the middle of the night potty run :)
