The Freedom Star
High reviews. “Isaac risks his life shepherding runaways along the Underground Railroad, all the while dreaming of the day when he too can escape the tobacco fields of South Boston, Virginia and begin a new life up north. He yearns for the freedom that Henry McConnell, his owner’s son, takes for granted. Isaac and Henry grew up together on the tobacco farm owned by Henry’s father, but what drew them together in the innocence of their youth now drives a deep wedge between them. At the onset of the Civil War, Henry joins the Confederates. … Isaac finds himself behind Union lines and free, but facing a gut-wrenching decision. Should he follow his dreams, or return to slavery to save his childhood friend? The author’s thoroughly researched portrayal of slavery and the Civil War era adds a rich backdrop to this poignant and suspenseful work of historical fiction. In this gripping family saga, the author presents vivid characters and compelling layers of story that will hold readers until the very last page.”

How To Get the Better of Adventure Camp: Basic Training
“11 year old Alex is super excited. Especially when it turns out that the trip is a week at Adventure Camp. But Alex doesn't really know what to expect. Who are these "instructors" in their outdoorsy uniforms? What are these massive wooden structures? And why do so many of the activities involve mud? Written by one of those instructors, "How To Get the Better of Adventure Camp: Basic Training" tells you everything you need to know before you go. What to expect, how to prepare, and even where to hide your sweets for the midnight snacks! Kids won't want their parents to read this but there's also some great information here that parents really need to know.”

Politics, Terrorism, and Intrigue/Conspiracy

Rare Earths (The Armegeddon Conspiracy)
”Two stolen Pakistani nuclear bombs, a conspiracy to manipulate the global market in rare earths and a plot to assassinate the President of the United States. It's going to be a busy week for Ali Monpour, special investigator for the National Security Advisor. Rare Earths is a fast-paced political thriller ripped from today's headlines! Action and intrigue intertwine from the deserts of Balochistan to the halls of power in Washington, D.C.”

Short. ”Looking backward into the dismal past to understand the ultimate cataclysm.”
I don’t know the plot so can’t say for sure if this is the heading it should be under.

City Wars
”It’s the not-too-distant future. Following the Great Wars, the city-state of Chicago has become an urban wasteland. Re-armed to defend itself, the government and its citizens wait in constant readiness for the day when war would break out again…with New York, Los Angeles, perhaps Dallas. Then, without warning, the attack comes…a limited atomic bombardment that threatens even worse devastation…”

The Blackout
“The world is thrust into darkness and silence, but no one knows why. Molly is an English professor at a local liberal arts college when the world suddenly goes dark. Her husband, Gary, is a corporate pilot on the other side of the country. Grounded by what appears to be a catastrophic power outage, he has no way to communicate with his wife, let alone get home to her. Not knowing whether her husband is alive or dead, Molly struggles to adapt to her new environment: without power, running water, transportation, a stable food supply, or any long-distance means of communication. Without knowing the cause of the outage, Gary must decide whether to wait for things to go back to normal, or to make the long and dangerous journey home on foot. Both must learn to survive after the Blackout.” "Unlike other "doomsday" books in SciFi tradition, this story is believable with characters who act like real people." - River Reader, Reviewer

  1. Natalia:

Have you seen this book and posted it on your site here:

    1. Hi, Anonymous, and thank you so much for taking the time to comment! :) I only check what newly comes up for free that exact day (that wasn't free the day before.) If it was free for a while, or even stayed free the whole time since I've been checking (about 9 months) it wouldn't have come up. On the other hand, maybe I saw it a long time ago and thought the gore was too hardcore. ;) Or maybe it didn't show up in the search for some reason or (gasp!) I just didn't see it!

In any case, thank you very much for the heads-up, and I've posted it today (the 29th). I appreciate it! :)
