NONFICTION

General Self-Sufficiency and Survival

Food Storage: Preserving Meat, Dairy, and Eggs
Brand new from prepper writer (fiction and non-fiction) Susan Gregerson. “each food and all the methods for preserving that particular food are described in their own chapters…Part I is an explanation of all the preserving methods, how to do them, and what you’ll need: Canning, Dehydrating, Freezing, Salting, Brining, Sugaring, Smoking, Pickling, and Fermenting, as well as some not-as-often heard of ones as Ash, Oil, and Honey for preservation. Part II starts with meat and works its way through (different kinds) then dairy… and finishes with … eggs. All the methods that work well with each food are explained along with directions for the preparation and processing of that food.”

The Social Engineering Network: The Darker Side of Facebook
”A short yet detailed guide describing the steps users with malicious intent carry out in order to gain access to your Facebook account using mostly passive forms of Social Engineering. Examples are provided for exact methods used by many "hackers" including links to the tools and web pages used to gather your information. As this is not meant to be a "How to" guide on hacking, the last section contains a series of steps that you can follow in order to ensure that your account is not vulnerable to such techniques.”

Thought For Food (21st Century Dilemmas)
From review: “…Everything from where food comes from, processed food, synthetic flavors, food in cultures around the globe, how food affects us physically, mentally, and emotionally, as well as how are feelings and emotions effect what we eat. … each chapter was written by a different expert.”

Cooking for the Freezer: 25 Make-and-Freeze Recipes

I don’t usually post general cookbooks unless they are about a particular subject of self-reliance. Sometimes I will though if they seem extra special or very highly rated. (This genre of e-books is unfortunately rife with copy-and-paste quick-buck-makers.) Here are a couple I think qualify.
The High Plains Sifter: Retro-Modern Baking for Every Altitude
This looks like quite a find. This one specialized in recipes perfected for high altitudes. Includes a photo of every recipe. ”Chris Reynolds is a professional baker trained at the Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland by …famed cooking teachers …he embraces an artisan philosophy, …This book embraces a "retro-modern" approach. Old-fashioned recipes are updated for modern life. That could mean streamlining the steps, using modern flavour combinations, using different techniques to give fool-proof results, or even scaling a recipe ….”
The Home Baking Pantry Essentials (In the Pantry Baking Standards)
Apparently even experienced bakers learn something from this.

Disaster Genre Secrets for Screenwriters
Excellent reviews. “The information in this book will teach you: * How to truly disrupt everyday life in the narrative world of your screenplay with a catastrophic disaster. … * How to tap into three fundamental human anxieties that none of the screenwriting "gurus" ever discuss. …* How to use cities, vehicles, animals, monsters and storms from natural forces to create thrills and chills your audience will never forget. …* A simple strategy for using Google Earth or Google maps for narrative worldbuilding in your screenwriting. …* Lists of Disaster genre clichés and instructions on how to avoid them. * Two secret ways that pro screenwriters use concepts like destiny, fate and chance to please audiences around the world.”
Insert book terminology for movie terminology: “Frankly, if you can watch a Disaster movie, you can write one. But it'll only be as good as the deep human needs you're able to satisfy through theme, imagery, archetype, characterization and effectively structured plot.”

You will learn specific, actionable, and measurable techniques that you can start today to turn your financial future around. Education (Self, Home, School)

Fearless Parenting. Raising a Child to Face the Adult World.
”Instead of teaching them how to struggle, we eliminate struggle from their lives. Instead of teaching them how to persevere, we tell them not to try so hard. Instead of teaching them to do without, we teach them all they have to do is ask. Instead of teaching them to be adventurous we make them risk adverse. Instead of teaching them how to succeed, we teach them to be happy because we’ve succeeded. So our kids grow up parent dependent instead of independent. The good news is, we can change. Instead of focusing on giving our kids the most fantastic childhood ever, with just a few little attitude adjustments, we can work to prepare them for adulthood. To give them tools to succeed instead of reasons for failure. We can teach them to value honor and integrity over 'cool' and 'sexy.' We can show them how to earn self-esteem, handle defeat and persevere when the going gets tough. “

True Accounts

Love Endures All Things: A Journey with "AL"zheimers [ILLUSTRATED]
”Artist/writer, Ginda Simpson, learned much throughout her father’s unforgettable and invaluable journey with Alzheimer’s. … As a physician, writer and teacher, her father would have wanted his final life journey to illustrate and illuminate for both his family and the medical community the mysteries and the magnitude of Alzheimer’s. Confident that her father would have wanted her to write this story, she set herself to the task. LOVE ENDURES ALL THINGS is Ginda’s way of honouring her father, a man of infinite courage and integrity. His was an extraordinary life. Her hope is that her words will offer comfort and courage to others on a similar journey.”

Pulled by Horses
“In the Metfield of the 1930s you could do all of your shopping without leaving the village, have a choice of pubs and ‘spend happy evenings helping to dig potatoes and listening to the old boys.’ If this sounds too idyllic to be true, Evelyn Whiting’s charming memoir of growing up in this Suffolk community is quick to remind us that making a living from the land was hard and tedious work in those days. There was no electricity and water came from the sky, or from the pond.”

Medicine Men: Extreme Appalachian Doctoring
Highly awarded author. “A collection of the most memorable moments from old-school rural physicians who each practiced medicine for more than 50 years in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Hilarious, heroic, heartwarming true stories of miracle cures, ghost dogs, and much madcap medical mayhem.”

The Accidental Anarchist
“By the time he was twenty-five years old, Jacob Marateck had been a Jewish officer in the notoriously anti-Semitic Russian army during the Russo-Japanese War, a revolutionary who sought to overthrow the Czar, and sentenced to death three times. After avoiding the firing squad for the final, unlikely time, he escaped from a Siberian forced labor camp with Warsaw's colorful "King of Thieves." Together, the two struggled to survive and obtain false papers to travel home while avoiding the Secret Police. Told from Marateck's uniquely humorous perspective, The Accidental Anarchist is the remarkable, true story of an ordinary man made extraordinary by participating in the history-making events of the 1900s in Russia and Poland. Throughout all the hardships he endured, he never lost his optimism, which was key to his survival.”

When You Come Home: The True Love Story Of A Soldier's Heroism, His Wife's Sacrifice and the Resilience of America's Greatest Generation (Historical Romance)

Good and Perfect Gift, A: Faith, Expectations, and a Little Girl Named Penny
” When her first baby, Penny, is given a frightening diagnosis, Amy Julia's world comes crashing down. Could she continue to trust God's goodness through what felt like personal tragedy? But challenging surprises often lead to unforeseen joy, and disappointments can turn into blessings. This wise and beautiful book is more than a courageous story of raising a child against the odds--it is a journey through the unexpected ups and downs of life and the discoveries that come along the way.”

Please Stop
”a memoir about two people growing up during and after the Great Depression, their deep and enduring love, and how they coped with Parkinson's disease. …”

The Forgotten Warriors: Mission of Mercy
”Through the telling of his experiences in Vietnam, he not only frees himself from the shame and stigma imposed by the U.S. government and society, but he resurrects the honor and the dignity of every man and woman who served their country in Vietnam, these forgotten warriors who demonstrated their unswerving patriotism by serving in a country halfway around the world only to be treated as social outcasts upon their return home. “

Pull up a Sandbag and Pass me a Lamp
”This story follows the path of a young man who joins the Royal Air Force Regiment in 1964 and leaves in 1988. “

True Life Stories: My Past Shadows of Fear
”Her emotional, Internationally and Nationally-reported story touched and inspired many, as well as bringing to light a valuable lesson in regards to how runaways are treated within the system. Using her own experiences to give a message of hope to young runaways and their anxious families, she calls for a more responsible and enlightened approach on the part of authorities and police, who have it within their power to show greater sympathy and concern for young people who find themselves in desperate situations. She went through hell and triumphed in the face of adversity, narrowly missing death and surviving to tell an utterly true yet 'Stranger-than-Fiction' story.”

Makass
”Though she's endured unspeakable trauma, Paulit's story is one of survival, hope and the powerful promise of a brighter future.”

A Country Lost, Then Found
”Young Juraj Zednik is spending the summer of 1968 abroad when Warsaw Pact tanks invade Czechoslovakia. Sickened by the rot in his homeland, Juraj opts not to return. …”

FICTION

Nature Survival, War, and other Hardship

Princes of the North 1909
”The trains brought the adventurers. And with them they brought their own traditions and their own Wild West. The last great frontier was about to be changed forever.”

Cold Lonely Courage
”Madeleine Toche races to the front only to find her brother mortally wounded during the German Blitzkrieg attack on France at the outset of World War II. His death and her rape at the hands of an SS Stormtrooper cast Madeleine down a path of death and violence as her desire for revenge reaches a crescendo.”

Politics, Terrorism, and Intrigue/Conspiracy

Within: A Medical Suspense Novel
”A movement is happening in cancer care, far from the sterile halls of conventional hospitals and the one-shot-fits-all drugs of pharmaceutical companies. Doctor Richard Blake and his synergistic, personalized treatment stand at the forefront of this revolution. But Plaxin Pharmaceuticals will stop at nothing to suppress the doctor’s groundbreaking discoveries.”

Collapse, Post-Apocalypse, Speculative Futures

Price of a Bounty (Reliance on Citizens Makes Us Great!)
Dystopia. “Keira Maddock lives in a dark future in which the Elite have everything, and everyone else suffers. She is a survivor. Out of necessity, she has become a skilled seductress, thief and bounty hunter – a Freelancer. When a typical job goes awry, it changes everything. Alliances are formed, long kept secrets are revealed and lives are forever changed. …introduces a world divided in which not everyone is who he seems to be. In a seamless blend of action, sci-fi, romance and political suspense, we are encouraged to consider the bonds that makes us human.”

Zia's Path (Apocalyptic Novelette) (The Dark Future Series)
dystopian world with gangs and slavers.

A Brave New Hope
“In a bleak near future, one blighted by apathy and corruption, it's nearly dinner time …In what would be seen later as a rash decision, the government has encouraged its youth to vote - soon this spirals out of control as they decide to vote for each other... The analog past clashes with the digital future, and the world as we know it tilts slightly on its axis. “

REDUCTIONS

The Jakarta Pandemic
Very many high reviews. I’ve also seen it highly recommended on survival-type internet boards. “In the late fall of 2013, a lethal pandemic virus rages unchecked across the globe. When the Jakarta Flu threatens his picture perfect Maine neighborhood, Alex Fletcher, Iraq War veteran, is prepared to do whatever it takes to keep his family safe. As a seasoned sales representative for Biosphere Pharmaceuticals, makers of a leading flu virus treatment, Alex understands what a deadly pandemic means for all of them. He particularly knows that isolation is the only guaranteed way to protect his family from the disease. With his family and home prepared for an extended period of seclusion, Alex has few real concerns about the growing pandemic. But as the deadliest pandemic in history starts to unravel the fabric of their Maine neighborhood, he begins to understand that the flu itself will be the least of his problems. …”
