Children and Natural Disasters
”details a woman's first-hand accounts as a child at the epicenter of the Sylmar Earthquake of 1971, then as a mother of a 5 year old at the epicenter of the Loma Prieta Earthquake in Santa Cruz in 1989. A few years later, this mother and her 9 year old son lived at the epicenter of the Northridge Quake in 1994, as well. Discussion of how children can help with preparedness, can learn to react safely and can come to marvel at the power of nature, rather than fear it as an anomaly. Also included are several disaster preparedness resources created especially for children.” The one poor review is ridiculous, in my opinion. I don’t know if the book is wonderful but you certainly can’t tell from that review.

FICTION

Nature Survival, War, and other Hardship

The Ride
” To become a soldier, a boy must surrender his childhood innocence, for the sake of duty. Otto Krueger, a youthful Waffen SS soldier, fighting in an elite motorcycle unit against the resistance during the final months of World War II, is pitted against two forces: his spiritual conscience and loyalty to a cause. The road he takes leads to a need for him to make a choice. Follow Otto in his motorcycle journeys through the Balkans, Northern Italy, and even Venice.”

Tracks In The Snow
” In this novella set during the latter part of World War II, a squad patrolling out past their lines comes under fire from an extremely talented German sniper. Trapped without reinforcements, the soldiers struggle to survive the grinding attrition and cold reality of war.”

Gold And Fishes
Tsunami. “On December 26, 2004 the earth erupted under the waters of the Indian Ocean….From the devastated tourist beaches of Southeast Asia to the graveyard that was Banda Aceh, Ayla sets out on a personal mission – to find her sister’s gold-hungry husband and return him to his family. In the midst of universal tragedy, what is the value of a single life? Can Ayla expose a killer and avoid becoming the next victim as she and her team struggle to bring hope to a region that is drowning in despair?”

Bounty Hunter: The Beginning
” After his father’s tragic death, sixteen-year old Ben Sharp is living a life of solitude in a one room cabin in the woods. He is lonely and restless but cannot see a way to change his situation. His life takes an unexpected turn the day two horse thieves ride up leading a stolen stallion. When the two outlaws attempt to rob him, Ben is able to turn the tables. His successful capture of the men opens up his world to the life of the bounty hunter. Ben sets out on a journey that will transform him from a boy into a man. This coming of age tale is full of action, adventure, humor, and romance.”

Politics, Terrorism, and Intrigue/Conspiracy

Transfection
”Dr. Peters discovers the reason behind the cancer link with GM food, but it's so crazy, he barely believes it himself. … 23-page old-school science fiction story, starring a molecular biologist who makes a discovery that shocks the world, only to find his life under threat. It takes in militant vegans, corruption, homelessness, university politics, radiation, the celebrity-obsessed media, and a shadowy conspiracy.”

THE WHITE RAVEN PORTFOLIO
” After a mountain climbing accident on the border of Tibet, CORD SALTER is picked up by a Chinese ski patrol. Held and interrogated inside an old lamasery, now a penal camp for Chinese dissidents, he discovers an aging American POW from Vietnam. RICH LARKIN is the sole survivor from a missing platoon of Americans never accounted for at the end of the war. He has no idea what happened to the other men who have disappeared, one by one, while in captivity. Nor can he give a reason why he, alone, is still alive. Salter escapes, and after a harrowing pursuit by his captors, reaches safety. Back in the U.S. he tracks down the daughter of the surviving POW. Now the mystery of the missing platoon begins to unfold as Salter and CARI LARKIN seek proof of a decades old conspiracy code-named WHITE RAVEN - a search that will turn deadly as they soon find themselves on the run from the CIA as well as the Chinese.”

KILLING for the CURE -A Biomedical Techno-thriller
Written by a cancer/neurogenitive disease researcher.
” With the help of the same DNA analysis technology that he uses in the lab, Alan searches for the answers, while trying to balance cutting-edge research in cancer, the business of marketing a new test, and mentoring his new students. It is only when his kidnapper becomes a killer that Alan realizes that information he possesses is a threat to his life.”

Cloud Crash: A Technothriller
“A mad bomber crosses the country with nothing to lose and orders to kill. He won't stop until the "cloud computing" that powers the internet is destroyed. But he's not acting alone--he's part of a conspiracy that reaches to the highest levels of power.”

The Persian Caper
Middle Eastern nuclear thriller

Collapse, Post-Apocalypse, Speculative Futures

Avalon: The Retreat
” a compelling account of how one group of survivalists endures the worst event the world has ever known - a Nuclear World War. … incorporates real survivalist skills to help prepare you for that fateful day when catastrophe strikes. It could very well be sooner than you think! Are you prepared? “
Author "has been a practicing Survivalist since 1966 and has conducted numerous survival training sessions as a retreat planner for more than thirty years."

Ice Baron (Ice Chronicles, Book One (science fiction romance))
” Former Kazakhstan, year 3145 A.D. 1,000 years ago, nuclear war destroyed the face of the earth. Now the earth is frozen in a permanent ice age.... Anya has loved Joshua for years. Unfortunately, he's her protector, and became baron of Donetsk Territory when her father was murdered. According to the Old Barons' Law, a romantic relationship between them is forbidden. However, breaking the law will probably never become an issue, for Joshua is determined to negotiate peace with their mortal enemy, Onred. Joshua presents Anya with a choice--marry the Altai baron in order to ensure peace for their territory, or else her people will continue to die in the bloody war. Joshua must get Anya out of his territory before he does the unthinkable and breaks the protector's sacred trust. When Onred proposes an end to centuries of brutal war, Joshua accepts the bargain. Bound by duty and honor to protect his citizens, and fulfill his sworn vows to Anya's dead father, he will do what is right, no matter the cost to himself. Should Anya accept her fate? Can Onred be trusted? Or is he a madman, who will drive their world to the brink of destruction? “

Elysium. Part One.
” A Post Apocalyptic Tale of Community and Corruption. 2140 CE For a century the world has been savaged by the S18K4 virus. The Great Pathogen swept across the globe like a planetary cancer. Populations dwindled, societies fell, economies plummeted, and ideologies crumbled. It is now the age of reclamation. Governments strive to take back land and yet, in the south-west of England, their efforts are obstructed. A coastal village has thrived in the intervening years and, secluded from the rest of the world, have grown fearful of what might befall them were they exposed.”

Forsada: Volume II in the New Eden series
” Driven into hiding and pursued even into the depths of the mountain, Lupay and her friends do their best to resist. But resistance won't withstand the onslaught forever, and ultimately Lupay must choose: flee into the radioactive barrens of the Desolation, or rise up and fight fire with fire”

Unsealed - A Clearer Vision
I couldn’t figure out where to put this book so I randomly put it under this heading. “…The Reverend Roland Avery, a great admirer of Daniel, believes our times to be “the time of the end” and sets out to break Daniel’s code and uncover the secret of the date of the Return, never imagining the consequences of such action to himself and his family… opens mystical doors to things long ago sealed, and leads the reader to confront the primary reality of the times in which we live.”

More Sci-Fi-or-Fantasy-ish

Lightning of Her Own (The Bugfall Trilogy)
” When the aliens landed seventy-two years ago, the first thing they did was turn off the power….The aliens themselves killed very few people, but riots, looting, disease, natural disasters and the sheer brutality of a harsh life that no one had lived for generations have reduced the population of Earth to a few tiny handfuls, scattered among the abandoned ruins of a lost civilization. Now word has come to Amarylla’s father, the chief civil engineer of the Federal Republic of New York, that an unknown man in the far northern plains may hold the key to turning the lights back on.”

REDUCTIONS

A Wilderness Calling
“After years of living addicted to pain pills, Ken Johnson finally had a plan to get clean. It wasn't a typical plan but a plan that would take him far from his home in Albany, NY. He would travel to Alaska where he would undergo an inpatient rehab to get clean from the drugs that have held him hostage for so long. From there, he would venture out into the Alaskan backcountry (Lake Clark National Park) on an expedition that would test his new found sobriety and once again connect him to the wilderness he loved. Little did he know that along the way he would fall in love, learn that wild animals can be both friendly and deadly, and fulfill one man's dream of experiencing the true beauty of the Alaskan wilderness. This is a must read for anyone who loves nature, the spirit of the wilderness, and the message of hope.”

Unintended Consequences
From review: “I found it to be at least as good as any John Grisham novel.”
” Nineteen years ago, Indiana police found the body of a young girl, burned beyond recognition and buried in the woods. They arrested George Calhoun for murdering his daughter, and his wife testified against him at the trial. The jury convicted him. Now his appeals have been exhausted, and his execution is just a few weeks away. George said he didn’t do it. That the body isn’t his little Angelina. But that’s all he’s ever said – no other defense, no other explanation. Dani Trumball, an attorney for the Help Innocent Prisoners Project, wants to believe him. After all, there was no forensic evidence that the body in the woods was George’s daughter. But if the girl isn’t Angelina, then who is it? And what happened to the Calhouns’ missing daughter? For nineteen years, George Calhoun has stayed silent. But that’s about to change, and the story he tells Dani—if it’s true—changes everything.”
