The following author has written dozens of books. The one I read had his article, then the other half of it was promoting his other books. This doesn’t mean he doesn’t have any good info, but I just wouldn’t normally list them as I don’t like that tack. Today he has so many on the specific subject for free I thought I’d list them and you can decide. 

True Accounts

Transition From City Madness to Rural Bliss: Living in the Woods of Nova Scotia.
“In this captivating personal account of a couple's departure from the madness of Vancouver city life to the solitude of a wooded homestead in Nova Scotia, the author relates the joys of returning to his childhood passions and seeking a life of self-suffiiciency. Surrounded by the natural beauty of Nova Scotia's forests they begin the transition to a new, healthier lifestyle shared with their miniature Dachshund, Max, and a host of heritage poultry, including chickens, bantams, guinea fowl and geese, and a small herd of endearing goats. With more than 50 acres and a sturdy house they experience the daily delights of Nature all around them while growing as much organic food as possible and integrating into the rural community. The author shares much of his knowledge about raising poultry and keeping goats which will be of particular interest to those inclined to emulate his lifestyle.”

The Migrants - My new life in Australia
Author has written 2 other books preceding this, about her family story and about going through WWII.( No Glory in War)

True Accounts of Espionage (The Anonymous Spy Series)

Just Don't Turn Around
Author’s story of living in communist Czechoslovakia. “So much has been written about communism and its gulags, prisons and dissidents who eventually became well known figures all over the world. However, so little is known on the subject of millions of regular people and their daily life. For my readers, who never experienced any type of tyranny is very difficult to understand or feel the brunt of constant pressure from an oppressive government trying to control every step of everyone’s life, from the crib to the grave. The main governing tool is a very high level of fear that controls one’s thinking, his conduct and religion in open and at the same time the one is trying to create his own identity which must have been hidden from that society. A little bit of open deviation from what is required by the government is heartlessly punished. Agents listening to us are never too far and always ready to throw us into a gulag. We live two lives – one in the open and the other one in the hidden - the real life. My father use to call it the “double-face” life.
The fear of repressions reaches a higher level when someone decides not to follow the herd and chooses his own way – way out the country surrounded by barbed wire resembling a huge concentration camp. I choose risking all our lives just like I said to my father the day of Soviet invasion to Czechoslovakia in August 1968: ‘…sometimes it is better to die standing up than to live life on your knees.’”

WARTIME

Collapse, Post-Apocalypse, Speculative Futures

Winter Kill - War With China Has Already Begun
Good news, here it is again! This would probably be the book that inspired this blog, if there is a single one. Although I still haven't got far into the book as I don’t even have a Kindle myself, as much as I know so far it's the one closest in plot and emphasis to how I’d like a book to be. Extra- long synopsis below.
”In (this) terrifyingly plausible military techno-thriller…you will be immediately drawn into the strong characters of this richly detailed adventure. As the pace accelerates, you will become wrapped up in the action at the local level. At the same time, your thirst for the economic, geopolitical and military context of the war will be thoroughly satisfied. With unexpected developments and twists, this story will confront you with the daunting challenge of surviving in the Winter Kill world, just as it confronted the people of the Sunshine Coast communities of the Pacific Northwest and numerous strategic locations around the world.
“When the Nuclear Extinction War...begins, it comes as a complete surprise to just about everybody. But for retired military planner, Casey Callaghan, it represents the culmination of the worst case scenario which he had feared was inevitable – and one for which he had made extensive preparations. His motivation is the security of his wife and five small children, his extended family and as many of his friends and neighbors as he can save. The world is faced with the unimaginable devastation of a global nuclear winter which kills off 95% of humankind like the winter kill of a crop in nature. Survival has suddenly become very personal.
“After reading Winter Kill, when you consider our relationship with China you might see, as Casey Callaghan does, that we are blindly rushing towards catastrophe... You will also find yourself reflecting on real world events such as the Arab Spring, the steady rise in the price of gold and the talk of an attack on Iran as subjects well explored in Winter Kill…”

Lost Child (Volume Two) - Retribution in the Nantahala
Volume Two, comes after Lost Child (Volume One) - Anguish in the Nantahala which has been listed here free before. Apparently you do need to read the first one first. The books are by the same author as Winter Kill - War With China Has Already Begun above. They are about a child getting lost in the wilderness and the father’s journey to find her.

Trauma Junkie #3 The Blackout Blues
”It's the hottest summer on record and new York City has gone dark. Communications go down, EMS, Police and The Fire department are flying deaf and blind. Subways halt in tunnels, Traffic and Street Lights are out! Tempers grow short, and people panic at the thought of another terrorist attack... Brian, Mel, Brooklyn, and the rest find themselves in the middle of it.”

Crimson Rain
“Several decades after a nuclear catastrophe rocked the globe only two bastions of civilization stand secure on the planet. Amongst the technology and the relative peace and serenity, though, lies a darkness that is kept anything but secret. The government allows the rich to victimize the poor and large corporations to kidnap people like guinea pigs for their experiments. … three unlikely heroes are seeking change, …”

Manna: Two Visions of Humanity's Future

More Sci-Fi-ish

Fractal Cadence
“An apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic science fiction novel. In the near future, medical technology has advanced. Processed bamboo structures could replace bone, and any flesh within the reach of pixie dust could be regrown. When Lila Stevens loses her leg in a car crash, she proves to be the exception. Beyond the reach of modern medicine, in a society terrified by the disobedient edges of knowledge, she was the new pariah.…She built a life for herself within the boundaries imposed on her by the loss of her leg, uniquely independent, living self-sustainably half way up a mountain abutting the edge of federal Adirondack parkland.
“As she stumbled along in her independence, civilization faltered, then fell.”
