Guttersnipe

Even before being evacuated he had to keep his wits about him to survive …and when he finds himself involved in a German spy ring he knows just what to do to save himself and his country. What Jack is not prepared for, however is the duplicity of the British establishment who in wartime, it seems, will do anything to make sure that state secrets stay secret.”

The Autobiography of Elof Dahlberg
Written in “1929 talking about the struggles and triumphs of a Scandinavian immigrant in the 19th and 20th century.”

She and her family are given the choice to either find a way to leave Germany on their own, without any resources, or be deported. After a series of frightening narrow escapes, Sonia finds that she must give up everything she knows and loves just to survive. This is the complex true story of one girl, who rises from war's ashes to sing the songs of hope and love world-wide. A heart-wrenching and poignant memoir, by internationally renowned singer Sonia Korn-Grimani.“

Ness City Chronicles
“Each story is … a snapshot of the past that delights the reader, yet still manages to illustrate the struggle people faced just to 'get by' in post-Depression America. Although food and jobs are scarce and life is sometimes very hard, the children depicted in this charming memoir still manage to find ways to demonstrate the veracity of the old adage, 'kids will be kids'…Bill comes up with inventive and often mischievous schemes to keep himself entertained, earn a little pocket change, contribute to his family's needs, and scrounge for extra food -- all while staying one step ahead of his parents and the local authorities. “

Forces in the Air
“In the days before the recognition of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, life could be miserable for a family in the Forces. Ms Trumley tells of a post-WWII childhood with constant moving, ostracization by classmates, a strict father who drank to excess to cope… “

The Hazards of Life in Ancient Civilizations
British-written, dry humour. “a novel list of hazards to living in the ancient world … When you consider how bad people have had it throughout ancient history, it becomes clear that today’s world isn't such a bad place after all.” Why did the Vikings keep invading the cold parts of Europe? Warning: Contains adult themes.

Leaving it all behind : a vagabonds tale
“tells of how the writer lives in the New Forest region of England, working odd jobs for a living, making do, forming friendships and getting by.”

I Travel Light: The Man Who Walked Out of the World (The Adventures of a Greenman Series (Complete set))
“The true story of a gifted young adventurer who … must do without many of the things that cost him so much money, work less and provide for his own basic human needs, self-sufficiently...he heads off on a Gap Year to Brazil, eventually building a tree house to live in... lives in a ruin…becomes a fisherman in India, before getting caught up in a Tsunami. Eventually he renounces everything he owns, except for the clothes he stands in. He sets off on a walkabout without even a bag or destination, wandering Eastern Europe… volunteering at organic farms, orphanages and communities in many countries, developing new skills. After a decade of living simply, he walks back into the world… that he no longer knows how to live in (with) little knowledge of modern day life and technology.” Written as a novel but is his own story.

FICTION

Nature Survival and other Hardship

“Abigail Parker's journey to the Klondike gold fields in 1898…harrowing adventures and poignant love. Soon after her steamboat arrives in Dawson City, Abigail is forced to deal with disaster and betrayal in the hostile environment. … she survives her first ice-bound winter in a small log cabin.”

Politics, Terrorism, and Intrigue/Conspiracy

Dyodyne Experiment - Part 1
Gold Medalist in the 2009 Independent Publisher Book Awards, Popular Fiction Category. Part 1 of a four part technothriller. “…a microscopic computer system with the ability to secretly track people with pinpoint accuracy,… code-named DaNA, is transmitted as a benign virus.” Plus, “six nuclear bombs hidden in six major cities….”

Velocity^2
“"Crazy Ken" has developed a free energy device that harnesses the Earth's gravitational force. Only one problem--It's also a bomb. …Through a series of terrorist attacks, brownouts and blackouts, President Anderson forces the government into socializing the electric production industry. But what the people don't know is that the electric plants are being replaced by Ken's free energy device…someone has stolen a device and is threatening to destroy the world… Ken soon realizes that size does not matter as much as location. With the clock ticking and with thousands of square miles to search, Ken has to find the hypothetical needle in a haystack--or in this case, a ping-pong sized bomb in a national park larger than some states.”

THE ALADDIN NETWORK
"...a plot to destroy the commercial and industrial system of the United States...By using sophisticated encryption and communication techniques, they hit our Achilles heel and the devastation begins."

Collapse, Post-Apocalypse, Speculative Futures

BLOODROSE
“America in the not-too-distant future. The characters are fictional. The events could happen. Pray they don’t! The story takes place at a time when the American economy has collapsed. Law enforcement lacks the resources to control crime. Violent ethnic gangs are out of control. … Juanita meets Tyler as he is on his way to seek refuge with some distant relatives on a remote Texas farm. … Tyler leaves the farm and joins a militia movement to help restore American sovereignty. ..Juanita is kidnapped by white supremacists …” See link for more details.

NEW LIFE
Short story. I didn’t put this in the sci-fi although the cause of the collapse is aliens, because it appears the book is about how a couple deals with the collapse of society and little to do with the origin of it. “For an ordinary English couple honeymooning in Hawaii their lives are thrown into pandemonium as they struggle to protect themselves in search of escape from the chaos. Brought to the now wasteland shores of the United States, by the American Military, they embark on an adventure …looking for a way to carry on their lives… or at least begin a new life.”

Nine-Tenths
"Leonard Tramer and his family live in Colorado, trapped behind the walls of a totalitarian state. Dedicated to one another and determined to find the free world, they plan an escape which defies the odds and deceives their tyrannical government. ...Emerging at a time when personal liberties and Internet privacy are slowly eroding, NINE-TENTHS offers a window into a dysfunctional society, while celebrating the resiliency of the human spirit and the natural urge to resist oppression."

This book was released late in the day yesterday, and I only caught it by chance, so posted it in its separate post late yesterday. It’s still free this morning, but I don’t know for how long.
The Grid
"What if all the power suddenly vanished? "One morning, Emma is on her laptop when the internet suddenly dies. Then she finds the lights don't work. And then, outside her window, a plane crashes to the ground. A massive solar flare has knocked out all electricity, all over the planet. And now all of humanity finds itself on the brink of chaos. Realising that she might never see her family again, Emma sets out with her creepy neighbour Pierce on a journey across the country. They hope to find a city where they can find out what's happening. But they stumble from one horrifying experience to another, until finally they find themselves holed up in a library as looters and murderers run amok.
"This is the first volume in a new series. Each book is approximately 20,000 words long. Contains swearing and violence." It seems to be a British-written novel. (That's a good thing. ;) )

The Fallen
“A post-apocalyptic journey across three continents, The Fallen explores how far we would go to protect the ones we love. When a wave of energy from deep space passes over the Earth, human memory is erased and technology destroyed. With humanity reduced to a state of nature, Tim finds himself in Africa, separated from his wife by unimaginable distance. Meanwhile, two young scientists in America try to escape the chaos, seeking answers and safety. Will they find what they are looking for, or will they succumb to The Fallen?”

Eleventh Hour (Revelation Series)
“a controversial religious and political thriller that explores how powerful leaders can manipulate the beliefs of millions of people and what happens to the few brave enough to maintain their integrity. “ Explores “scriptural prophecy through the lense of today's events.”

More Sci-Fi-or-Fantasy-ish

Alpha (The Second Sun Trilogy)
1st of trilogy (others don’t seem to be available). "An unexplained phenomena is troubling the continents of the Southern Hemisphere. Illnesses, accidents, erratic behaviour - all without an obvious cause. Dr. Jack Ellis and his team learn it could be linked to the mysterious cloud forming across the thermosphere"

The Angel & the Brown-eyed Boy (Tales from Earth's End)
Won several independent book awards. “By the late 22nd century, the Great Recession of the early 2000s has lead to a worldwide police state. A ruined United States barely functions. Government control masks chaos, dissenters are sent to camps, and technology is outlawed. War rages while the authorities proclaim the Great Peace. …Tomorrow morning at 7:35 AM, a nuclear holocaust will destroy the planet. Two people carry the keys to survival: Jeremy Edgarton, a 16 year old, tech genius and revolutionary; and Eliana, the angelic, off-world traveler sent to Earth on a mission to prevent her planet's death.”
